These chapels actually play a big role in one of the most important traditions in Terceira: the Festas do Espírito Santo. During spring and early summer, each império becomes the center of local celebrations. 

Each império is run by a local brotherhood, and every year someone is chosen to be the “emperor” and organize the events. The whole thing feels very local and community-focused, and it’s a big part of Terceira’s identity.
