Begin by visiting some of the city’s historic churches, including the Sé Cathedral, Igreja da Misericórdia, and the Church of the Holy Savior’s Cathedral. For a quiet moment, step into the Convent of São Gonçalo or the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Conception.

Start with a visit to the Church of Santa Cruz, one of the most important landmarks in town. Just a short walk away, you’ll find the Church of the Holy Christ and the colorful Império Do Divino Espírito Santo da Caridade.

If you’re searching for local food experiences in Terceira, Azores, one of the tastiest answers is cheese. With more cows than people*, Terceira takes great pride in its rich dairy traditions, and cheese plays a central role.

Queijo Vaquinha is a family-run farm, just a short drive from Angra do Heroísmo. As the island’s largest cheese producer, their products are widely available in shops, but visiting the farm offers a much more authentic experience.

You’ll be offered a free sample plate of four different cheeses, ranging from mild to aged, including a spicy variety. You can then purchase your favorite to take home, or enjoy a snack from their small menu. 

They also produce their own honey, which pairs beautifully with the cheese. We ended up leaving with a few kilos of cheese, honey, and locally made ghee. Trust me, you will want to save some space in your luggage for some local goodies.

Start at Calheta dos Lagadores, a dramatic spot where dark lava rocks form a contrast against the Atlantic. Just next door, you’ll find the Piscinas Naturais dos Biscoitos, some of the most stunning natural pools in the Azores. 

After a dip, learn more about Terceira’s winemaking tradition at the Wine Museum (it’s free!). For something more personal, head to Dimas Adega, a rustic wine cellar offering tastings of locally made wines in an intimate setting.

When it’s time to eat, Mar & Vinhas is the go-to spot, with a menu focused on fresh seafood and seasonal ingredients, all served with ocean views. Before you leave Biscoitos, stop by Padaria Délia Martins for a treat.

Hiking is one of the best Terceira activities for nature lovers. These are some of my favorite hiking trails in Terceira, and a few of them are available as guided tours if you want to go deeper without worrying about logistics.

Lagoa do Cerro isn’t as well-known as other hikes, but that’s part of the charm. This peaceful trail leads through forested paths to a small crater lake. And it is perfect for beginners.

This is the starting point of the trail. I recommend you park your car nearby and start your trek from the main road. Walk straight until you see an arrow indicating Lagoa do Cerro on your right. It should be the first turn.

If you only do one guided hike on the island, let it be this one. This 3-hour coastal walk covers one of the most scenic parts of Terceira’s shoreline. Our guide was super fun and accommodating, so I can’t recommend it enough.

If you are looking for a relaxing experience, head to Quatro Ribeiras Beach, Piscina Natural de São Sebastião, Piscina Natural do Refugo, Piscinas Naturais de Porto Martins, or Zona balnear das Cinco Ribeiras. 

Or simply wander around the coastline until you stumble across one. There are so many natural pools in Terceira that is are quite literally on every corner of the coastline.

You’ll head down a long staircase into the cave, where you’ll see moss-covered walls, small lagoons, and volcanic formations all around. The light coming through the top of the chimney creates one of the most dramatic photo spots in Terceira.

The best time to visit Terceira Island is between May and September, when the weather is warm, the landscapes are lush, and the sea is calm enough for outdoor adventures like swimming, hiking, and whale watching. 

July and August are the peak months, thanks to festivals and vibrant cultural events, but they also bring larger crowds. For fewer tourists and slightly cooler temperatures, consider visiting in May, June, or September.

For reference, we spent a month in Terceira from mid-May to mid-June, and we didn’t see the sun a single day in May. In case you are planning a quick visit and don’t want to face rain, I would recommend sticking to June, July, or August.

✈️ How to Get to Terceira, Azores

Getting to Terceira is easier than you might think. Lajes Airport (TER) is the main gateway to the island, with direct flights from mainland Portugal (Lisbon and Porto), other Azorean islands, and a few seasonal routes from Europe and North America. 

TAP Air Portugal, Azores Airlines, and Ryanair are the most popular airlines. If you’re already in the Azores, island-hopping flights make it simple to add Terceira to your itinerary. Ferries are available in high season as well.

🚗 Getting Around Terceira: Car Rentals, Taxis & Tours

To make the most of your trip, renting a car in Terceira is highly recommended. Public transportation is limited and doesn’t reach many of the island’s best attractions, like hidden viewpoints or volcanic caves.

If driving isn’t an option, taxis and guided tours are good alternatives. Just keep in mind that taxis are not budget-friendly and can quickly add up & end up costing more than a car rental. For example, a 30-minute ride from the airport costs around 30 euros.

For first-time visitors, 3 to 4 days in Terceira is the sweet spot. This gives you enough time to explore both Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória, visit volcanic sites like Algar do Carvão, hike scenic trails, and relax in natural pools. 

If you want to dive deeper into the island’s slower pace, local food culture, and lesser-known villages, 5 days or more will give you a fuller experience without feeling rushed.

Can you visit Terceira in one day? The short answer is yes, thanks to its compact size. However, one day on Terceira Island only scratches the surface of what this beautiful Azorean destination has to offer.
