The Top of the Rock observation deck is open daily from 8 am to midnight, with the last elevator going up at 11.10 pm. Hours may vary on holidays, so checking their website before visiting is recommended.

Please note that the information on Google Maps is wrong. It says that the Top of the Rock opens at 9 am when in reality, you can book your visit at 8 am. We entered at 8 am, so I can confirm that the information on the official website is correct.

If you want to avoid the crowds and get neat photos from the Top of the Rock, the first time slot at 8 am is an absolute must. Depending on the season, 8 am doesn’t always offer the best light, but that is the only way to have a peaceful Top of the Rock observation deck experience.

Sunset is a popular time to visit the Top of the Rock, as the view of the city bathed in golden light is truly magical. It is a great time for photography, however, you won’t be able to avoid the crowds at this time of the day. It is great for landscape photography though!

Nighttime offers a different charm as the city’s iconic buildings light up. If you’re looking to capture the glow of Times Square or the Empire State Building’s vibrant lights, night photography at the Top of the Rock is ideal.

We visited Top of the Rock at 8 am at the end of September and had it completely empty for at least 30 minutes. This gave me plenty of time to take photos of myself and focus on skyline photography after.

The main entrance for Top of the Rock is located on 50th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, Rockefeller Center is easy to reach by various means of public transportation.

If you are using the subway, take the B, D, F, or M trains to 47-50th Streets/Rockefeller Center. Alternatively, the E and M trains stop at 5th Avenue/53rd Street, which is also within walking distance.

If your hotel is located in Midtown, the chances are you can reach Top of the Rock on foot. It’s only a 10-minute walk from Times Square, 15 minutes from Bryant Park, and 10 minutes from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

Visitors typically spend around 1 to 2 hours at the Top of the Rock. This allows time to explore all three observation levels, take photos, and enjoy panoramic views of NYC. For sunset visits, you might want to stay longer to capture the city as it transitions from day to night.

Once you reach the entrance of the Top of The Rock, you will need to purchase or validate your ticket. After you enter Rockefeller Center go through a quick security screening and head to the Welcome Gallery, which features a 10-foot model of the entire campus.

Then, you will be guided into the Top of the Rock Theater for a short film to learn more about the Rockefeller Center complex and its history. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but there is a surprise at the end of the film that I absolutely loved.

Next, a high-speed elevator takes you to the observation deck, reaching the 67th floor in under a minute. The ride to the top is an experience in itself, with the glass ceiling of the elevator offering a unique view as you go up. 

Once you exit the elevator, you will visit the 67th floor. It is mostly indoors, providing a comfortable viewing area in all weather conditions. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow for uninterrupted views. If you ask me, this was the most underwhelming floor.

Then, you will find an escalator to the 69th Floor. This level offers outdoor views with glass panels and the iconic coin-operated telescopes.

70th Floor is the highest viewing level and can be reached by stairs. It offers completely unobstructed views, as there are no glass barriers on this floor.

We can safely say that the Empire State Building is one of the top attractions in New York, so most tourists choose to visit the observation deck on the top of the Empire State Building. 

Both observations offer fantastic views over New York, however, from the Top of the Rock, you get a spectacular view of the Empire State Building. This was one of the main reasons I chose to visit Top of the Rock, and it didn’t disappoint.

Top of the Rock observation deck experience wouldn’t be complete without taking beautiful New York postcards. Since it is one of the best photo spots in New York, I am here to share insights and photography tips for Top of the Rock.

As you already know, you need to book the first time slot to avoid crowds. This is particularly important if you want to have photos of yourself and shoot someone else. For the landscape photography, sunset will be the best time.

Once you exit the elevator, do not waste your time on the 67th floor because that is the least impressive part. Instead, head to the 69th floor and send your photographer to the 70th floor. This will give you a unique perspective of the observation deck and skyline.

The best spots for photos at the Top of the Rock are located on the side of the Empire State Building. Central Park is amazing to see, however, there are some skyscrapers covering the landscape, and apparently, there are more to come.

When it comes to equipment, there is not much space, so a wide-angle lens is recommended. If you want portraits or photos with the iconic telescope, a 35mm lens is the best option. For the views, a telephoto lens is a must!
