10 best things to do in Central Park

1. Explore the stunning architecture of Bethesda Terrace

Bethesda Terrace is a true architectural gem and one of the best attractions in Central Park. Known as the heart of the park, this two-level terrace features amazing designs inspired by nature, including carvings of birds, flowers, and fruits.

The arcade below the terrace is an absolute treasure. Its ceiling is covered with over 15,000 colorful encaustic tiles, which create a stunning mosaic effect. I am sure you will recognize this place from many movies and TV series.

The terrace was designed in the 1860s and remains one of the most photographed landmarks in the park. Make sure to explore both the upper terrace, with its sweeping views, and the lower level, which leads directly to Bethesda Fountain.

Bethesda Terrace is free to enter and accessible from 6 am to 1 am. If you are a photography lover, you will need to plan an early sunrise mission. However, a lively atmosphere during the day is also a must-see!

2. Take the iconic photo with Bethesda Fountain

Just steps away from Bethesda Terrace is Bethesda Fountain, one of the most recognizable landmarks in New York City.

Bethesda Fountain was completed in 1873 and designed by sculptor Emma Stebbins. The fountain represents the biblical healing of a disabled man at Bethesda, and it is also known as the “Angel of the Waters.”

The fountain has appeared in multiple films and TV shows, including Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and Sex and the City. It even inspired the playful intro of Friends, where the cast famously dances around in a fountain.

Once you have taken the iconic photo of the fountain, sit on the surrounding steps, listen to street performers, or simply enjoy the calming sound of water. For couples, this is one of the most romantic things to do in Central Park.

3. Stroll the historic path of The Mall & Literary Walk

The Mall & Literary Walk - one of the best things to do in Central Park

The Mall is one of the park’s most iconic walkways and a centerpiece for Central Park walking tours. It’s the only straight pathway in Central Park, designed intentionally to create a grand promenade, which contrasts with the park’s otherwise winding trails.

At the southern end of The Mall, you’ll find Literary Walk, named for the statues of prominent writers that line the path. Among these statues are tributes to William Shakespeare, Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and Fitz-Greene Halleck.

Walking along The Mall, you’ll pass under a beautiful trail of tall American elm trees. In spring and summer, their green leaves form a shady archway. In the fall, the leaves turn bright orange and gold, creating a colorful scene. Even in winter, the bare branches add a peaceful charm.

4. Cross the iconic Bow Bridge

Bow Bridge is a must-visit for anyone exploring the best attractions in Central Park. This elegant cast-iron bridge spans 87 feet across Central Park Lake and connects the park’s West and East sides.

One of the best things about Bow Bridge is its location. Positioned in the middle of the park, it provides breathtaking views of both the surrounding greenery and the city skyline in the distance.

It’s one of the best places for photos in Central Park, and it’s easy to see why couples often choose this spot for engagements or wedding photos. The bridge also has a romantic charm, making it one of the most romantic things to do in Central Park for couples.

5. Visit the ‘Imagine’ Mosaic at Strawberry Fields

Strawberry Fields is a peaceful area of the park dedicated to the memory of John Lennon. Located near West 72nd Street, this 2.5-acre section is named after The Beatles’ song “Strawberry Fields Forever.”

The centerpiece of this area is the “Imagine” mosaic, a black-and-white tiled tribute to Lennon’s vision of peace and hope. Visitors from around the world come to pay their respects and leave flowers, candles, or other mementos at the mosaic.

This quiet spot is perfect for reflection and a favorite for free things to do in Central Park. It’s also close to the Dakota, the building where Lennon lived. You won’t be able to access the courtyard of the building, but you can see it as you approach Central Park.

6. Grab a hotdog or plan a picnic at Central Park

No visit to Central Park is complete without enjoying some classic park food. Grab a hotdog from one of the many vendors scattered throughout the park for a real New York experience. If you prefer something more leisurely, plan a picnic at one of the park’s open spaces.

Sheep Meadow, located in the southern section of the park, is a popular spot for picnics, sunbathing, and group activities. The Great Lawn, on the other hand, offers plenty of space and scenic views, making it ideal for family gatherings.

Bring a blanket, some snacks, and enjoy one of the most relaxing outdoor activities in Central Park.

7. Rent a rowboat

Renting a rowboat is a classic way to enjoy the peace of Central Park. The boats are available at the Loeb Boathouse, and rowing across The Lake offers a relaxing retreat from the busy city streets. It’s a fun activity for families and one of the most romantic things to do in Central Park for couples.

As you paddle, you’ll pass under Bow Bridge and get close-up views of the park’s lush landscapes. This is truly one of the top things to do in Central Park if you want to experience the park from a different perspective.

Boat rentals are open every day from 10 am to 4 pm and it costs 25 USD per hour. Reservations are not accepted.

8. Find the best views in Central Park

Central Park sightseeing

One of the best things about Central Park is that it offers stunning views throughout the year. It is a perfect destination for photography, relaxation, or simply taking in the beauty of nature in the middle of a busy city.

For those willing to go to the northern part of the park, Summit Rock offers one of the highest and most scenic views in Central Park. Another fantastic spot for panoramic views in the Northern section is The Great Hill.

My personal favorite is this hidden photo spot in Central Park that you can see in the photo above. It offers a unique view of the San Remo Apartment building and the Lake. This is particularly stunning during fall foliage considering the beautiful scenery around.

It is not indicated on Google Maps, so it might be a bit tricky to find, but I am here to help you with that. If you are walking from the Bethesda Fountain, cross the Bow Bridge and look to your left. The second path is the place to be!

9. See the Gapstow Bridge

Gapstow Bridge is a charming stone bridge located near the southeastern corner of the park. It’s one of the best things to do in Central Park, offering picture-perfect views of The Pond and the Midtown skyline.

In the spring, the surrounding flowers bloom in vibrant colors, while the fall brings rich tones of red and orange. Winter transforms the scene into a snowy wonderland. Gapstow Bridge is a timeless spot for Central Park sightseeing and you can visit it any time of the year.

10. Climb to Belvedere Castle’s Lookout

Central Park must-see spots

Belvedere Castle is one of Central Park’s most recognizable landmarks and it combines architecture with panoramic views. The name “Belvedere” comes from the Italian “Beautiful View,” fitting perfectly for this purpose.

Built atop Vista Rock, the castle was created by Calvert Vaux, one of the masterminds behind Central Park’s design. It was intended to serve as a place where visitors could enjoy panoramic views of the park’s landscapes.

Climbing up to the castle’s terrace opens up panoramic views and offers another excellent photo opportunity. Morning light or late afternoon are the best moments to snap an iconic Central Park postcard.
