One Day Siena Itinerary: Discover the Best of Siena in 24 Hours

Piazza del Campo

Piazza del Campo is the heart and soul of Siena, making it the perfect starting point for your one-day Siena itinerary. This unique shell-shaped piazza is one of the most iconic and beautiful squares in Italy. 

At its center stands the stunning Palazzo Pubblico, while elegant ancient palaces encircle the square. Many of these historic buildings now house charming bars, restaurants, and cafes where you can relax and enjoy traditional Tuscan cuisine.

If you don’t mind waking up early, you should take advantage of the magic of the square at sunrise. I can guarantee that it will be one of your best memories from Siena.

Piazza del Campo is also famous for hosting the Palio di Siena, a historic horse race where Siena’s neighborhoods compete in a thrilling and deeply traditional event.

Palazzo Salimbeni 

From Piazza del Campo, take Via Banchi di Sopra to reach Palazzo Salimbeni. One of the best things about exploring Siena is that every route is filled with charm and beauty. So don’t be afraid to wander off and make your own discoveries.

The palace stands in a little picturesque square and it hosts the offices of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, one of the oldest banks in the world. The Palazzo is built in a neo-Gothic style, and it is inspired by the Palazzo Pubblico in Piazza del Campo.

Considering that you won’t be visiting this palace, it is just a quick stop on your Siena itinerary and won’t take a long time from your precious time of one day in Siena.

Basilica Cateriniana San Domenico

Walking through via della Sapienza, you will get to the Basilica Cateriniana San Domenico, an unmissable spot when you visit Siena. 

The Basilica is built on a small hill and dominates the old town, making it one of the most recognizable and iconic places in Siena. There is also an incredible view of the Duomo and the rest of the city from the Basilica.

The Basilica is built in Cistercian Gothic style and dates back to the XIII Century. It’s one of the most important religious sites in Siena and all of Tuscany. It is dedicated to Caterina, the protector of Siena. 

While the main part of the Basilica doesn’t have any decoration, you will be surprised to see what is hidden inside. The chapel houses sacred relics, including St. Catherine’s head and one of her fingers, making it a significant pilgrimage site.

The entrance at the Basilica Cateriniana San Domenico is free. It is open every day from 8.45 am to 6 pm. Keep in mind that you won’t be allowed to take any photos or videos inside the church.

Siena Cathedral

Via della Galluzza is the fastest way to reach Siena Cathedral. However, if you want to make the most of one day in Siena, opt for the more scenic route via Via Camporegio, as it offers stunning panoramic views of Siena. 

From there, descend to Via Fontebranda and continue uphill along Via Del Costone. The Duomo is just 200 meters away, located at the end of Via Fusari.

Constructed in the 13th century, the Duomo of Siena was designed to be the largest church in the world. The cathedral blends several styles, including Italian-Gothic, Romanesque, and Classical.

Unlike the simple brick façade of the Basilica Cateriniana San Domenico, the Duomo welcomes you with a stunning exterior. The splendid marble facade totally stole my heart… until I stepped inside!

The interior is breathtaking, with black-and-white marble stripes on the walls and columns. There are 2 beautiful stained-glass round windows representing The Last Supper and the Assumption of Mary.

Look down, and you’ll find the famous marble mosaic floor, often described as “the most beautiful, great, and magnificent pavement ever made.” This floor, crafted over centuries, features scenes from the Old Testament and geometric patterns.

As if that weren’t enough, the Duomo holds another treasure: the Piccolomini Library. This small but beautiful library is a work of art and is one of the best places to see in Siena in 1 day. The Library is painted by Pinturicchio, one of the most important Italian Renaissance painters

Facciatone

Just a stone’s throw from the Cathedral, you’ll find the Facciatone, an extraordinary piece of Siena’s history. Translating to the “big façade,” the Facciatone is a memory of the ambitious 14th-century plan to expand the Siena Duomo into one of the largest churches in the world. 

While the grand project was never completed due to the Black Death, this unfinished structure has become one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Climbing on the Facciatone is one of the best things to do in Siena in 1 day. 

The panoramic views from the top are simply breathtaking. You will love the sight of Siena’s red rooftops, rolling Tuscan hills, and other landmarks like the Torre del Mangia. It’s the perfect spot for snapping Siena photos and admiring the city’s medieval charm.

Palazzo Chigi-Saracini

Just a five-minute walk away from the Facciatone, you’ll uncover one of Siena’s hidden gems: Palazzo Chigi-Saracini. This stunning Gothic urban palace is a must-see for those who like to discover off the beaten path.

Dating back to the 12th century, Palazzo Chigi-Saracini is the home of the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, a prestigious music academy known worldwide for its classical music programs and concerts. As you admire its façade, take note of the elegant Gothic arches and windows.

In 1506, the Piccolomini-Mandoli family took charge of restoring the palace, transforming its interiors, cortile, and loggia with Renaissance-style touches. The blend of Gothic and Renaissance details makes it one of the best places to see in Siena.

Fun fact! Inside the palace, you’ll find a fascinating art collection featuring works from Sassetta and Sodoma. You can get a glimpse of it by attending one of the academy’s concerts. Access to the loggia instead is free.

Lunch: La Taverna di San Giuseppe

All this art and beauty must have worked up an appetite, right? Luckily, Siena is one of the “tastiest” cities in Italy, and the Tuscany region offers something for every palate.

If you only have one day in Siena, you simply can’t miss trying the local specialties. These include wild boar, Tuscan wines, local olive oil, cold cuts, cheeses, and more. 

To savor the best of it, I highly recommend a meal at La Taverna di San Giuseppe, located just a 5-minute walk from Palazzo Chigi Saracini. This Michelin-recommended tavern is a culinary gem and the perfect place to experience authentic Tuscan cuisine. 

The rustic ambiance pairs beautifully with the genuine, high-quality food. Don’t leave Siena without trying their Pappardelle al Cinghiale (wild boar pasta) or their incredible selection of local cold cuts. Braised meat cooked with local wine is another must-try dish.

While the focus is on meat, there are a few vegetarian options as well. 

Complement your food with something from their extraordinary wine cellar, which offers over 600 labels, including some of the finest local wines. 

Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena or Wine Experience

After refueling with a hearty dose of carbs, protein, and a glass (or two) of wine, take a short stroll to the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena, which is a must-visit for every art lover.

The Pinacoteca offers a wide collection of Sienese masterpieces, showcasing works from the late medieval to the Renaissance era. It’s a deep dive into the city’s artistic legacy and a feast for the eyes.

If you feel like you’ve had your fill of art and are ready to embrace the Dolce Vita, consider winding down your day with a memorable wine experience.

• Prefer a more casual vibe? Opt for a red wine tasting paired with a charcuterie board. It’s a relaxed yet delicious way to enjoy the region’s flavors and toast to a perfect day in Siena.

Piazza del Campo and Palazzo Pubblico

Wrap up your one-day Siena itinerary right where it began—Piazza del Campo. As the sun sets, the square becomes even more magical. 

While here, consider stepping into the Palazzo Pubblico, one of Italy’s most popular civic museums. Even if you’re short on time, take a quick walk through the loggia to snap an iconic photo of Siena with your eyes up.

The museum’s fresco collection is nothing short of extraordinary. The Sala del Risorgimento is a highlight, shining with artistic brilliance, but there’s so much more to explore. Don’t miss the Sala di Balìa, and the Cappella dei Signori as well.

The museum is open daily, with hours extending until 6 pm in winter and 7 pm in summer. The entrance fee is 6 euros.

Dinner: La Prosciutteria Crudi e Bollicine Siena or Osteria La Sosta di Violante

After a full day of exploring, who’s ready for more food and wine? I’m sure everyone visiting Siena is always open to another bite or glass! Depending on your appetite, I’ve selected two fantastic spots in the city that you won’t want to miss.

If you’re in the mood for a true gem and one of the best restaurants in Siena, Osteria La Sosta di Violante is the place to be. This cozy Tuscan eatery serves some of the finest pasta dishes and meats in a homestyle setting. 

As with most Tuscan restaurants, the hospitality and service here are exceptional. Be sure to try the Pici (a traditional Tuscan pasta) or Cinta Senese (a local breed of pork).

If you’re craving a lighter dinner, head to La Prosciutteria Crudi e Bollicine Siena, where you can sample the best Italian snacks and wines. This spot focuses on quality ingredients with no artificial additives, pre-cooked items, or industrial sauces. Everything is as fresh as it gets. 

While the menu is centered around meat, including a variety of cured hams and charcuterie, you’ll also find options like ribollita for those looking for something vegetarian.
