10. Swim at Zona Balnear da Silveira or Zona Balnear da Prainha

Despite being the cultural capital of Terceira, one of the best activities in Angra do Heroísmo is taking a swim at one of its local beaches. Depending on your preferences, you can choose the comfort of a sandy beach or the unique experience of a natural volcanic pool.
As its name suggests, Prainha is a small sandy beach ideal for a relaxing day with family, especially if you’re visiting Terceira with kids. The beach offers showers, cafés, and lifeguards during the season.
For those seeking a more adventurous swim, Silveira is the better choice. This natural lava-rock pool features ladders leading directly into the ocean, perfect for diving and snorkeling. Silveira is best suited for confident swimmers.
Another option is Zona de Banhos do Fanal. While it didn’t look like a comfortable swimming or tanning spot, we noticed quite a lot of locals jumping in for a swim daily.
11. Visit the Museums of Angra

If you think Angra do Heroísmo’s cultural scene is all about churches, wait until you discover its museums! Some of the most important must-see attractions in Angra are, in fact, its fascinating museums.
The most famous is probably the MAH, Angra do Heroísmo Museum, housed in a historic convent. Here, you can explore religious relics, exhibits about the Great War, a collection of carriages, and even a Ford Model T. Entry costs just 2 euros and is free on Sundays.
The Palácio dos Capitães Generais is one of the headquarters of the Azorean government and among the most impressive palaces on Terceira. It offers daily guided tours (closed on Mondays), and while entrance is free, donations are encouraged.
For those interested in modern military history, the Núcleo de História Militar – Manuel Coelho Baptista de Lima is a cultural attraction not to be missed. Finally, if geology fascinates you, the Museu Vulcanoespeleológico is a must-visit.
12. Go Whale Watching

The privileged location of Terceira makes it a perfect base to explore and understand the sea life. One of the best things to do in Angra do Heroísmo, Azores, is to take an adventure in the middle of the ocean to go whale watching.
While many places around the world offer whale watching tours, the Azores stand out as one of the top destinations. The islands are a migration point and home for several species all year round.
Out of the 81 whale and dolphin species in the world, up to 28 can be spotted in the Azores. That’s an impressive number for such a small region. From sperm whales to playful dolphins, you’ll be amazed by what you might see.
Tours depart daily from Angra Marina, usually in the morning when the sea is calmer. It’s best to wear layers and bring sunscreen, even on cloudy days. You can find a few stands selling tours near the Marina and book your tour here.
We didn’t see any whales, but we were lucky to spot a lot of dolphins roaming around in June. Overall, it was a 10/10 experience, so don’t miss it when visiting the Azores.
13. Eat at Local Restaurants

Finding local restaurants is always one of my favorite activities when visiting a new place, and the local food in Terceira truly blew me away. Even after years of living in Portugal.
Fumeiro de São João is a standout choice. Traditional yet creative, this restaurant serves outstanding dishes. We had melt-in-your-mouth tender meat that was simply unforgettable.
Another gem is Tasca das Tias, where tradition is alive and the food is as genuine as it gets. The tuna here was one of the best I’ve ever tasted, though their meat dishes are equally worth trying.
If you’re familiar with Portuguese culture and want a local tasca experience, O Chico is probably your best bet. You’ll find all the classic Portuguese dishes here, but I highly recommend trying the Azorean Alcatra.
A little outside the city center is Restaurante Taberna Roberto. Don’t let the distance deter you, if you don’t have a car, a taxi is easy to grab. This spot cooks over a wood fire, delivering top-quality meals. We loved the tuna, but it’s also a favorite among meat lovers.
Dining in Terceira isn’t exactly cheap, but the quality is consistently high. You’ll quickly realize it’s money well spent, and each meal feels like a special treat.
14. Grab a Coffee or Book at Lar Doce Livro

If you’re wondering where to find a cozy café in Angra do Heroísmo to enjoy a relaxing break, Lar Doce Livro is the perfect spot.
Located in the old town, this charming gem is both a bookstore and a bar, where you can sip coffee or drinks while browsing a curated selection of books. Don’t hesitate to try their delicious sweets, they’re definitely worth it!
The space is not only inviting but also offers books in Portuguese and English, with occasional selections in other languages as well.
15. Try Traditional Sweets at Dona Amélia at O Forno

While cheese, meat, and fish are the most popular specialties in Terceira’s local cuisine, Dona Amelia is a sweet treat you simply can’t miss when visiting the island.
Dona Amelia is a small cake made from a rich batter of cornflour, cinnamon, sugar, plenty of eggs, and either honey or molasses. It’s the perfect companion to a coffee or a delightful dessert after a meal.
You’ll find this iconic cake in many places across the island, but if you’re in Angra do Heroísmo, the best spot is probably O Forno. This award-winning bakery is renowned for serving the finest Dona Amelia on Terceira.
