Hotel Review: Where to Stay in Kakheti, Georgia
Kakheti is Georgia’s premier wine-producing area. Any wine lovers here? If not, don’t worry because this area of Georgia offers many other things as well – historical gems, beautiful views, romantic destinations, and, of course, famous Georgian hospitality.
Before visiting the Kakheti area I was on a mission to find the most authentic experiences for wine, food, and adventure. And I found it all in one place. Keep reading and you will find the most magical place where you can stay in Kakheti and discover real Georgian charm.

Mestvireni – the island of peace in the heart of Kakheti
Welcome to Mestvireni – wine cellar, restaurant, and hotel.. all in one. Topped with beautiful gardens, mountain views, and endless peace around you. This is a family-owned property in Kakheti and you can see that they put their heart into this place and their guests become part of the family. That was exactly what I was looking for, however, it still managed to exceed my expectations.
Location
Mestvireni is located in the heart of Kakheti and that means that you have all the main attractions nearby. You will find it right outside of Telavi which is considered the capital of Kakheti.
Tucked away from cars and civilization, it offers unforgettable views of The Caucasus Mountains. The villa itself is surrounded by a vineyard, walnut trees, peach trees, apple trees, a hazelnut garden, and even chickens. Trust me, there is nothing better than to open your eyes early in the morning, see the golden mountains in front of you, and hear nature waking up with you.
I have to warn you that this villa is located away from the main road and this means that you will have to drive 10 minutes on the country road. In case you rent a car, choose something like SUV. Trust me, it will be useful for the rest of your trip as well.
Experiences
Let’s talk about some unforgettable experiences that your hosts can organize for you.
First of all, you should book a wine tour even without thinking twice. That is a must-try when you are in the Kakheti area. The good thing is that the wine tour is right outside of your villa, so you don’t have to worry about a private driver or search for a taxi. The price is 40 GEL (11 EUR) per person and you get to try many different wines, learn about Georgian wine-making traditions, experience chacha making and so much more.
Another must-have is dinner that they offer because you get to try all local goodies – khinkali, Khachapuri, eggplants with a walnut sauce, chicken salad, tomato & cucumber salad, local oil, bread, and wine. We didn’t manage to finish all the food, so we had dinner for the day after as well. The price is 70 GEL (20E UR) per person.
In case you are a cheese lover, make sure you book cheese tasting. Georgian cheese is very unique, so they let you try 6 sorts of cheese. This way you can have a bit of everything and choose your favorite. The price is 40 GEL (11 EUR) per person.
Want to get dirty and participate in the Georgian wine-making process? Book Qvevri Tour. Feeling adventurous? Request a horse tour, bike tour, or plane tour.. or go hiking in the area. You can also request breakfast for an additional price.
In case you are a bit group of people, you can book dinner with the polyphonic folk ensemble, which is also known as tamada. It is a bit pricey, so I advise it for big groups only.
Private villa
Once you book this property, you have your own private villa. It can host up to 6 people, however, I think it would be the best option for 4 people (not including kids). Inside you will find old Georgian style with a modern touch – very charming.
You have a fully equipped kitchen in case you want to cook your own food. You have a beautiful dining area inside and outside, a BBQ, fireplace, heating, air conditioning, and everything else that you might need during your vacation.
Other important details
Where to book? Click here to see availability, prices and book your stay at Mestvireni.
Price? Depends on the season and amount of guests. For 2 people we paid 100 EUR per night. It might be a bit pricey by Georgian standards, but trust me, it is going to be worth it.
How long you should stay? I think 3 nights is the minimum to relax and see the main attractions around, plus, try some of their experiences.
Best time to visit? Certainly, autumn since it’s harvest time.
What to see around? Sighnaghi, Telavi, Bodbe Monastery, Tsinandali Estate, Zegaani, Alaverdi Monastery, The Ikalto Academy, Dzveli Shuamta Monastery, Akhali Shuamta and Gombori Pass.
Restaurants nearby? Highly suggested to try Amo, Signagi when visiting Signagi. Great food, affordable prices, and unforgettable views.
What to know before visiting? As I mentioned before, go for an SUV and make sure that you bring some extra layers, because Kakheti has a lower temperature compared to Tbilisi.
My personal highlight? Wine tasting experience, so highly advised to book that one.
